After months of work, the vision is becoming reality. As one of only 15 photographers worldwide selected for the Fujifilm GFX Challenge Grant Program 2025, I will present my project “To Be Yourself” at the global exhibition in Tokyo this October.
This project follows the wild horses of Livno across the vast plateaus of Krug and Cincar Mountain in Bosnia and Herzegovina, seeking to capture through photography something that is difficult to express in words—the essence of freedom. Descendants of working horses that were released into the wild more than thirty years ago, these horses have become one of the last great free-roaming horse herds in Europe.
For me, they are far more than a photographic subject. In their movement, silence, and presence, I find reflections on belonging, freedom, and the identity of an artist. Photographing them meant observing beings that do not perform, do not pose, and belong to no one but nature itself. Every image became an attempt to preserve a fleeting moment of an ancient freedom that still exists among the rugged horizons of the Bosnian wilderness.
“To Be Yourself” is therefore more than a documentary project about wild horses. It is a personal journey exploring the relationship between humans and nature, and a search for a place where authenticity can still exist without compromise.
Being selected for the Fujifilm GFX Challenge Grant Program 2025 is an extraordinary honor and an opportunity to share this story with an international audience. More importantly, it is a chance to present the unique natural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina on one of the world’s leading platforms for contemporary photography.
The exhibition in Tokyo marks an important milestone in the life of this project—but it is only the beginning of the story.
